A Tennessee man has been sentenced to life in prison plus 34 years for the 2022 murder of the mother of his child. Jermis Jones, 44, was convicted in Haywood County Circuit Court after a two-day trial.
Jones was found guilty of first-degree murder and multiple other charges, including attempted second-degree murder and employing a firearm during a dangerous felony. The sentencing occurred on Monday in Haywood County Circuit Court.
The shooting took place on Dec. 18, 2022. Perish Tyus was dropping off their 4-year-old son at the home of Jones's mother when Jones approached her vehicle and fired four shots, killing her. One bullet lodged near the child's car seat.
Jones fled the scene, disposed of the weapon, and hid before his arrest. He had prior convictions for three drug felonies. District Attorney General Frederick H. Agee said the act was senseless and that Jones would not walk free again unless granted relief on appeal.
