Tesla has begun deploying a localized dual-AI voice assistant in its vehicles in China. The system replaces the Grok model used elsewhere with two Chinese models to meet local regulations and preferences.
Tesla is introducing the upgrade through its partnership with ByteDance’s Volcano Engine cloud platform. ByteDance’s Doubao model manages direct vehicle controls such as climate settings, navigation, media apps, and the owner manual. It supports rapid responses, continuous commands, and recognition of up to 18 regional Chinese dialects.
DeepSeek handles conversational queries, including general questions and real-time weather and news updates. Drivers can now activate the system hands-free by saying “Hey Tesla” or a custom wake word, eliminating the need to press a steering wheel button.
The change allows Tesla to comply with strict regional data rules while adapting features to Chinese consumer needs.
