Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley described how the team's annual training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe builds team chemistry. He highlighted the benefits of staying away from home during the camp.
Haley spoke on The End Zone on SiriusXM NFL Radio. He recalled owner Mr. Rooney addressing the team about the modest facilities at the college.
"These aren’t the greatest digs. I get that. But it’s worked. It’s worked for a long period of time, so just deal with it and make the most of it," Rooney said, according to Haley.
The Steelers remain one of the few NFL teams that hold training camp away from their home facility. Players stay in dorms, which limits distractions and encourages bonding through shared activities such as card games and video games.
Haley noted that the setup helps reduce off-field issues and has been valued by past and present coaching staffs. The upcoming camp will be the first in Latrobe under head coach Mike McCarthy.
