In the small village of Bergvik outside Söderhamn, a tragic workplace accident occurred on Tuesday around 1 p.m. Two middle-aged men died after a tractor tire exploded, according to SVT reports. Police are investigating the incident as gross negligence causing another's death, but no one is suspected of a crime. The Work Environment Authority is involved in the probe, and Söderhamn municipality has activated a crisis support group. Relatives have been notified.
The village, where everyone knows each other, is deeply affected. Bergvik's church opened on Tuesday evening for conversations and support, offering coffee and candles for the mourners. Vicar Magnus Natander, 49, expresses the grief: 'It is always with sorrow when people are torn from life.' He emphasizes how the event reminds residents of life's fragility in the tight-knit community.
Locals remember the men as pillars of the village. Eva Lind Englund, 75, who knew one of them well, says: 'He was a wonderful person. Industrious. Kind and helpful. He was an all-rounder in the village.' She describes him as sympathetic and ambitious, always ready to assist with snow shoveling or other practical tasks. Carine Östlund, 73, who was close to the other man, calls him a 'spelevink' (fun character): 'He was a cheerful spelevink. A real rascal. Always up to something. There was always laughter around him.' She notes that he organized Saturday dances and that the village will now feel a void.
Both women dread the coming day: 'Bergvik will wake up with despair. And powerlessness. And immense sorrow,' says Eva Lind Englund. Carine Östlund adds: 'It feels empty. You get sad when you think about it.' The church plans to remain open on Wednesday to support the village in its grief.
