Area police boss Charles Wafula confirmed the incident, stating the protesters aimed to stop what they called an illegal resettlement by a mining company and tried to storm the station. "The individuals had organized a demonstration but did not notify police," Wafula said. He added, "Our officers moved in to contain the situation, but the group began attacking both officers and Ramula Police Post."
Protesters damaged key infrastructure, including police vehicles. A tractor parked near the police post was torched as residents accused authorities of ignoring their demands to address the mining company.
Police resorted to live ammunition when the situation threatened to escalate, resulting in two youths being shot dead amid the chaos. The remaining crowd dispersed.
Siaya County Commissioner Norbert Komora condemned the incident, faulting protesters and blaming unnamed elements for inciting youth to violence. “Last year, they did the same at the police [station] and did not act," the commissioner said, adding that such events cannot continue.
