The United States defeated Australia 2-0 on Friday at Lumen Field in Seattle to advance from Group D at the World Cup 2026. Cameron Burgess scored an own goal and Alex Freeman added a header before halftime.
Folarin Balogun created the opener in the 11th minute when his cross was turned in by Burgess. The USA dominated possession and added a second goal when Freeman's header was confirmed after a VAR review.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his players and the home fans after the result. "Argentina have amazing fans but we are matching Argentina," he said.
Wayne Rooney said he loved Pochettino's approach and called the USA team young and exciting. Australia coach Tony Popovic admitted his side looked sluggish in the first half after making three changes at halftime.
The USA made one change from their 4-1 win over Paraguay, with Ricardo Pepi starting in place of the injured Christian Pulisic. Australia made two changes from their win over Turkiye.
