Utah couple charged in torture death of son

A husband and wife in Utah face charges after authorities say they tortured their 11-year-old son to death and then tried to stage the scene as a hanging.

Brigham Young Merrell, 35, is charged with child abuse homicide and child torture. His wife, Melinda Marie Merrell, 36, faces one count of child torture in the death of their son, Moroni Merrell. The Tremonton Garland Police Department began investigating on Sept. 21, 2025, after a 911 call about an unresponsive child. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital despite efforts to revive him.
