Xbox has started a limited test of free game streaming supported by ads for Xbox Insiders. The program allows users to stream select games they already own for one hour at no cost.
Participants can access the service on Xbox consoles, certain TVs, PCs, and mobile devices. Ads lasting up to two minutes play before each session begins and do not interrupt gameplay. Users may extend playtime by watching additional ad blocks.
The test follows the same model as paid Xbox Game Pass streaming but removes the subscription requirement for eligible players. An Xbox Wire post states the company aims to create value for players who cannot afford paid options while maintaining ad quality standards.
Xbox listed six principles for the ads, including avoiding gameplay interruptions and ensuring transparency. The company said it will refine the approach based on feedback from the test.
