Two guards at the Blount County Detention Center in Alabama face murder and assault charges in the death of an inmate who suffered a diabetic medical emergency.
Joseph Evans, 26, and Liletzy Valdez-Carbajal, 19, were arrested Monday following a grand jury indictment. Prosecutors allege the pair repeatedly used a Taser on 23-year-old Arthur P. Morse while he was incapacitated and unable to stand or walk.
Morse died at a hospital on Feb. 6 after the incident at the detention center in Oneonta. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated the case and referred its findings to the Blount County District Attorney's Office.
Morse was serving a 15-day sentence for a probation violation tied to a 2025 driving under the influence conviction. Evans and Valdez-Carbajal no longer work at the jail, according to the sheriff's office.
Both suspects remained in custody as of early Tuesday. Their next court dates have not yet been set.
