Apple TV sets June premiere for Sugar season two

Apple TV has announced the return of its neo-noir detective series Sugar with an eight-episode second season premiering on June 19. Starring Colin Farrell as private detective John Sugar, the new installment follows his investigation into a missing sister amid a citywide conspiracy. First-look photos accompany the reveal of the weekly release schedule through August 7.

The acclaimed series Sugar, a contemporary take on the private detective genre, was renewed in October 2024 and will resume with its global premiere on Friday, June 19, on Apple TV. The platform will release one episode initially, followed by new installments every Friday until August 7, completing the eight-episode run.

Colin Farrell reprises his role as John Sugar, the Los Angeles-based film connoisseur and investigator, in this executive-produced project. The plot for season two centers on Sugar tracking the troubled older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer while continuing his search for a beloved missing sister. As the case unfolds, it reveals a broader conspiracy with sinister intentions, forcing Sugar to confront personal limits in pursuit of justice.

Joining Farrell in the cast are newcomers Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, and Sasha Calle, with Shea Whigham appearing as a special guest star. The series is showrun by Sam Catlin, who executive produces via his Short Drive Entertainment. Additional executive producers include Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg for Genre Films, alongside Farrell, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich. Mark Protosevich created the show.

Apple TV described the return: “Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Season two ushers in the return of Los Angeles’ iconic private detective and film connoisseur, John Sugar.”

Critics have praised the first season, now streaming globally on Apple TV, as “one of the best neo-noir thrillers in years” featuring “one of the greatest plot twists in recent TV history.” The announcement includes several first-look photos highlighting the upcoming season.
