Arizona woman charged with murder in deadly 2024 highway crash

Amy Lynn Mickelson faces three counts of second-degree murder after driving her BMW across the center line of U.S. 93 in Arizona and colliding head-on with a minivan, killing three occupants. The crash occurred on December 7, 2024, near milepost 175 in Congress, Arizona, when authorities say Mickelson was impaired. She fled to Utah and was arrested there on March 19, 2026.

On December 7, 2024, around 2 p.m., Amy Lynn Mickelson, 48, was driving a BMW sedan southbound on U.S. 93 near milepost 175 in the Congress area of Arizona, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The agency stated that Mickelson crossed the center line and struck a Toyota Sienna minivan head-on. Three people in the minivan died at the scene: the 51-year-old driver and two passengers aged 44 and 17, as identified by AZ Family. The four remaining occupants, all children aged 5 to 16, suffered serious injuries but were expected to survive after medical treatment. The BMW caught fire shortly after the impact, with witness Christina Lane telling AZ Family that she helped the minivan occupants while her boyfriend pulled Mickelson from the burning vehicle. Detectives from the department's Vehicular Crimes Unit investigated and determined Mickelson caused the crash. She left Arizona and moved to Utah, where U.S. Marshals arrested her outside a convenience store in Salt Lake City on March 19, 2026. Mickelson was held without bond in Weber County Jail before extradition to Yavapai County, Arizona. She faces additional charges including seven counts of aggravated assault, two counts of felony endangerment, criminal damage, and aggravated DUI. Congress lies about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix.
