Bermuda Chess Association launches $10,000 chess education scholarship

The Bermuda Chess Association has unveiled a $10,000 scholarship for high school graduates pursuing studies at Bermuda College in fall 2026. Supported by the XL Foundation, the award targets students with aptitude for chess, even if they are new to the game. It aligns with FIDE's global Year of Chess in Education.

The Bermuda Chess Association (BCA) announced its 2026 Scholarship on January 18, 2026, offering up to $10,000 toward tuition at Bermuda College. The funding, backed by the XL Foundation, supports students enrolling in the Associate in Arts (Business Administration) or Associate of Science (Actuarial Science) programs, covering as many as 64 credits.

A BCA spokesperson highlighted the scholarship's inclusive approach: “This unique award is tailored for high school graduates embarking on their tertiary education journey in fall 2026... Remarkably, the scholarship also welcomes students who are relatively new to chess that can show a strong aptitude for learning chess and applying its principles.” Unlike traditional chess awards, it does not require prior experience as a seasoned player. Instead, applicants must demonstrate aptitude over at least a three-month period, eagerness to learn, and leadership in promoting chess at school, such as through clubs or events. Academic performance is not a criterion; the focus is on potential, drive, strategic thinking, and serving as a positive role model.

The launch coincides with FIDE’s ‘Year of Chess in Education,’ a worldwide campaign promoting chess for youth skill development. In Bermuda, recent milestones include a Preparation of Teachers seminar in March 2025, accreditation of three schools as official chess schools, a donation of 800 boards from the Gift of Chess Charity, and a €10,000 grant from FIDE’s Planning & Development Committee. These efforts have made chess more accessible island-wide.

Chess, described as “a training ground for the mind,” fosters critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and decision-making—skills essential for international business and leadership. The BCA aims to nurture these in Bermuda’s future professionals.

High school graduates interested in applying can find details, deadlines, and guidelines on the BCA website at www.BermudaChess.com.
