A Peruvian national was detained as the alleged perpetrator of a fire that affected a five-story building in central Santiago early Sunday morning.
The fire broke out around 05:15 in a first-floor apartment of the building at the intersection of Rosas and General Baquedano streets. Witnesses and security cameras indicated that an individual wearing dark clothing sprayed an accelerant before igniting the fire and fleeing.
Santiago firefighters controlled the flames with no injuries reported. Two homes suffered damage, one with considerable structural impact.
OS-9 Carabineros personnel arrested the suspect around 13:05 at his home in the Estación Central commune. The detainee, a Peruvian national, has prior records for theft, domestic violence and alcohol consumption. The Prosecutor's Office will direct subsequent proceedings.
