The Greater Chennai Corporation has proposed building six new shelters for homeless people, along with a recovery shelter, to provide better tailored support.
The Greater Chennai Corporation plans to add six shelters to the 57 already operating in the city. Land has been identified for five of the new sites. One shelter will serve the central region initially as a transit facility, while another will function as a recovery shelter.
Commissioner G.S. Sameeran stated that the corporation also requires shelters for palliative care and for elderly residents without self-care. He noted that categories for five of the shelters remain undecided.
Councillor T.V. Shemmozhi highlighted the presence of homeless individuals in areas such as Anna Nagar who require assistance. Vanessa Peter of the Information and Resource Centre for the Deprived Urban Communities explained that transit shelters would allow initial assessment before referral to specialised services.
