The Chilean government backed Argentina's claim over the Malvinas Islands following a meeting between Presidents Javier Milei and José Antonio Kast at the Casa Rosada. The two nations issued a joint statement urging the United Kingdom to resume negotiations. The talks also covered economic cooperation and extraditions.
Presidents Javier Milei of Argentina and José Antonio Kast of Chile met at the Casa Rosada, marking Kast's first trip after taking office. The foreign ministries issued a joint statement in which Chile "reiterated the support of the Government of Chile for the legitimate sovereignty rights of the Republic of Argentina over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgias, South Sandwich Islands, and surrounding maritime spaces".
The document calls for Argentina and the United Kingdom to "resume negotiations as soon as possible to find a peaceful and definitive solution". Milei thanked Chile for its longstanding support on the Malvinas issue. Both reaffirmed their Antarctic commitment under the Antarctic Treaty System.
On economic matters, they tasked their foreign ministers with boosting investments, bilateral trade, energy, and mining under agreements like ACE 35 and the Mining Integration Treaty. Chile's foreign minister thanked Argentina for aiding the extradition of Galvarino Apablaza, accused in the 1991 murder of Senator Jaime Guzmán and the kidnapping of Cristián Edwards.
They prioritized enhancing border connectivity to cut logistics costs and agreed to activate bilateral mechanisms such as the 2+2 and COMPERSEG.
