Chilean women's team beats Paraguay 1-0 and rises to third place

The Chilean women's national football team defeated Paraguay 1-0 in Rancagua as part of the Nations League. Yanara Aedo's goal in the 34th minute helped coach Luis Mena's side earn seven points and climb to third place, still outside the direct spots for the 2027 World Cup.

The match, played at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua, was Chile's fourth in the Women's Nations League, a tournament offering two direct spots and two playoff berths for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. After a 3-1 loss to Peru in Cusco, La Roja needed this win to stay in contention.

Chile dominated from the start. At the 3rd minute, a poor clearance by Paraguay's defense nearly led to an own goal, stopped by goalkeeper Alicia Bobadilla. Vaitiare Pardo, standout on the right wing, created constant threats; at the 20th, her cross was cleared by Dahiana Bogarín.

Paraguay had a clear chance around the half-hour mark with a shot from Claudia Martínez, but it went wide. Chile responded at the 34th: a pass from Fernanda Ramírez to Christiane Endler opened play; Millaray Cortés crossed, and Yanara Aedo volleyed into the top corner for the 1-0, justified by the home side's control.

In the second half, Sonya Keefe headed at the 46th, but the ball bounced just wide. Paraguay pressed, but Endler, from Lyon, kept a clean sheet. At the 69th, Danna Garcete received a second yellow for a foul on Pardo, leaving the visitors with 10 players.

Chile pushed for more: shots from Keefe and Sáez at the 71st and 72nd went close. The 1-0 held, giving Chile 7 points and +4 goal difference, level with Argentina (7 points, +10) but trailing on tiebreakers. Venezuela leads with 8 points after a 6-0 win over Peru; Paraguay sits seventh with one win and two losses.

This result places La Roja in playoff territory, with a tight race among the top four.
