Ahead of the UN Security Council emergency session, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed support for the meeting to address US military strikes on Venezuela, voicing grave concern over the seizure of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
At a January 6, 2026, press conference, Lin Jian stated China supports the UNSC in discussing the US strikes and playing its role. He emphasized that the US actions violate international law, UN Charter principles, and norms of international relations.
China urges the US to ensure Maduro and his wife's safety, release them immediately, halt efforts to topple Venezuela's government, and pursue dialogue. 'We stand ready to work with the international community to firmly defend the UN Charter, the fundamental principles of international justice, and international fairness,' Lin Jian said.
This follows China's initial concerns over the January 3 US strikes, which captured Maduro and his wife amid tensions over Venezuela's oil reserves. The UNSC session occurred later that day, where China further condemned the US (see related article).
