Clashes in Peñalolén after eviction of illegal Christmas fair

On Tuesday night, hooded individuals clashed with Carabineros in Peñalolén following a municipal operation to dismantle an illegal Christmas fair. The disturbances involved burning barricades and stone-throwing, lasting two hours. No injuries or arrests have been reported yet.

In Peñalolén commune, a municipal security operation sparked unrest on Tuesday night. Inspectors, alongside Carabineros, targeted Departamental Street between Macul and Tobalaba, where over a hundred blue tents had been set up by unauthorized vendors for a clandestine Christmas fair.

The removal of several stalls angered the illegal sellers and local residents, prompting a group of hooded individuals to hurl stones at the officials. The latter retreated, and Control de Orden Público (COP) units from Carabineros soon arrived, deploying water cannons and tear gas to scatter the crowd.

Protesters retaliated by setting fire to barricades, firing fireworks, and assaulting police with blunt objects. The confrontation lasted at least two hours, halting traffic in both directions on the impacted road.

This marks the second intervention at the location this month; an earlier raid led to one arrest for drug sales. Authorities have yet to report any injuries or detentions from Tuesday's events.
