The Commission on Elections expects to issue a ruling next week on the legality of Senator Francis Escudero's acceptance of campaign donations from a government contractor in 2022. Comelec Chairman George Garcia stated that the commission is reviewing a recommendation on the matter. The decision will precede the resolution of a related complaint against Escudero.
In Manila, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to deliver its decision next week regarding Senator Francis Escudero's acceptance of donations from a government contractor during his 2022 reelection campaign. Comelec Chairman George Garcia announced that the commission members are currently examining the recommendation from the Political Finance and Affairs Department (PFAD).
"Hopefully not later than Wednesday next week, Comelec will already have a decision on this matter," Garcia said on November 19, 2024. He noted that the commission has the authority to either adopt or reject the PFAD's recommendation. This ruling is anticipated before Comelec addresses a formal complaint filed against Escudero over the same issue.
The investigation began on Comelec's own initiative after Escudero publicly admitted receiving a P30-million donation from Lawrence Lubiano, president of a government contracting firm. This probe extends beyond Escudero, as 26 other government contractors who donated to 2022 election candidates are also under scrutiny. Garcia mentioned that these contractors must respond to Comelec summons by Friday.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about campaign finance regulations in Philippine elections, ensuring compliance with laws prohibiting donations from entities with government contracts.
