DCI investigates death of child in Mombasa madrassa

Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations is probing the death of a five-year-old girl who fell from a madrassa building in Mombasa after being locked inside as punishment. The incident on November 18 has ignited public anger and demands for justice. Residents and child rights groups seek accountability from those involved.

The incident took place on the morning of November 18 at Madrassa Tul Nur in the Leisure area of Nyali, Mombasa. Police reports indicate the girl was separated from her peers and locked inside as punishment. As other children went to play, she attempted to escape through a window, fell, and died instantly.

Nyali Sub-County Detective Officer Mohamed Jillo stated that DCI officers have recorded statements from teachers, students, and madrassa leadership. “This appears to be a case of negligence. We are examining all details, gathering evidence, and determining if anyone failed in their duties,” Jillo said in an interview.

The probe will verify if the madrassa complies with child protection rules under basic education and children's acts. An anonymous madrassa source claimed the girl's mother instructed the teacher to punish her for refusing to attend that morning, leading to her isolation during a four-hour break.

Madrassa leaders and the girl's family declined to comment. The event has fueled intense online discussions, with users demanding explanations and accountability. Child rights organizations call for a thorough investigation and swift action.

Mombasa Child Officer Gabriel Kitile stressed safe discipline methods. “What happened shows no child should be endangered in the name of punishment. Every educational institution must ensure children are supervised and protected,” he said. Once complete, the file will go to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for decisions on charges.
