Democrat Emily Gregory won a March 24 special election for Florida House District 87 in Palm Beach County, defeating Republican Jon Maples 51.19% to 48.81% in a district that includes Mar-a-Lago, the residence of President Donald Trump. The vacancy was created when Republican Mike Caruso left the legislature to become Palm Beach County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller.

The March 24 special election in Palm Beach County’s Florida House District 87 was held to fill a vacancy after Republican Mike Caruso left the legislature to take the job of Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller.

According to unofficial election-night results linked by The Daily Wire to Florida’s election reporting system, Gregory received 51.19% of the vote to Maples’ 48.81% in the district, which includes Mar-a-Lago. County-level data cited in the same report showed Gregory running strongest in vote-by-mail totals, while Maples performed slightly better among early in-person voters.

Trump endorsed Maples the night before Election Day, posting on Truth Social: “There is a very important Special Election tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24th, for Florida State House District 87 in beautiful Palm Beach County — JON MAPLES HAS MY COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENDORSEMENT!” Trump added that Maples was “a very successful Businessman and Civic Leader.”

The Democratic National Committee sought to capitalize on the win in fundraising messages, describing the result as a “humiliating defeat” for Trump and arguing that voters were “furious with Trump and his cronies” over costs and health care.

Gregory campaigned as a moderate Democrat and, on her campaign website, called for increased government spending on affordable housing, health care and education.

Republicans, meanwhile, played down the political significance of the outcome, pointing to the dynamics of special elections and low participation. Republican National Committee senior adviser Danielle Alvarez said, “A low-turnout state House special election is a snapshot of local quirks, candidate dynamics, and turnout math — not some grand verdict.”

Despite the loss in District 87, Republicans still hold a large majority in the Florida House, 84 seats to Democrats’ 34, The Daily Wire reported.

In other Florida special elections held the same day, The Daily Wire reported that Republican Hilary Holley defeated Democrat Edwin Perez to keep a state House seat in Republican hands, while Democrat Brian Nathan narrowly defeated Republican Josie Tomkow in a state Senate contest.

Reactions on X to Democrat Emily Gregory's narrow win in the Florida House District 87 special election emphasize the flip of a Trump-won district including Mar-a-Lago, where Trump endorsed the Republican loser Jon Maples. Left-leaning accounts celebrated it as a rejection of MAGA, conservatives called it a low-turnout fluke favoring an inexperienced candidate, and news outlets provided neutral coverage.

Republican Matt Van Epps held on to Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District in a special election on December 2, 2025, winning by just under nine points in a district Donald Trump carried by roughly 22 points in 2024. The sharper‑than‑expected swing toward Democrats has stirred concern among Republicans about the 2026 midterms, even as Democrats cast the result as evidence of growing strength in traditionally red territory.

Voters in New Jersey's 11th Congressional District headed to the polls on Thursday for a special Democratic primary to fill the seat vacated by newly elected Governor Mikie Sherrill. The crowded field of 11 candidates highlights tensions between progressive and moderate wings of the party, with immigration enforcement emerging as a key issue. The winner will face Republican Joe Hathaway in an April general election.

Republican Matt Van Epps won Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District special election, defeating Democrat Aftyn Behn by roughly nine points and narrowing, but not erasing, the GOP’s prior edge in the solidly conservative district. Republican strategists say the outcome underscores the risks they see for Democrats in nominating candidates they describe as too far to the left in competitive races.

Eileen Higgins, a former Miami-Dade County commissioner, has been elected as Miami's first female mayor and the city's first Democratic mayor since the 1990s, defeating Republican Emilio Gonzalez by a wide margin in a runoff election. Her victory marks a significant political shift in the Hispanic-majority city and has drawn national attention as a test of voter sentiment on immigration, affordability and local governance.

A new survey shows that fewer than one-third of Maryland residents consider redrawing congressional districts a high priority, even as Gov. Wes Moore and national Democrats press for new maps that could eliminate the state’s lone GOP-held seat. Lawmakers are set to convene in a special session focused on House leadership and other matters, with Democratic leaders saying redistricting will not be on the agenda.

Democrats notched decisive wins in New Jersey and Virginia on Nov. 4, capturing both governorships and posting down-ballot gains — results widely read as a rebuke of President Donald Trump during a record-long federal shutdown.

Indiana House Republicans have released a draft congressional map that could give the GOP an advantage in all nine of the state’s U.S. House districts by targeting the two currently held by Democrats. The proposal, advanced amid pressure from former President Donald Trump and national Republicans, splits Democratic-leaning Indianapolis and now heads toward contentious debate in the GOP-led Senate.
