Disney names new baby giraffe Ivy at Animal Kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has named its newest Maasai giraffe calf Ivy. The calf was born in April and will make her public debut on the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna this summer.

Ivy weighed 120 pounds and stood nearly six feet tall at birth. She is being kept backstage until she is ready to join the herd. All giraffes at the park receive tree-themed names. Ivy’s mother is named Willow, and another member of the herd is called Maple. The care team selected Ivy from a list of 12 options. Ivy’s half-brother Tucker was born last year and has already appeared on the savanna. Maasai giraffes are listed as endangered, with roughly 30,000 remaining in the wild. The park expects visitors to see Ivy on Kilimanjaro Safaris later this summer.
