DOH: Fireworks injuries climb to 235 amid delayed reports, more expected

The Department of Health reported 235 fireworks-related injuries nationwide since December 21, 2025, up sharply from 140 cases logged before New Year's Eve, with totals expected to exceed 300 due to late submissions from hospitals.

Updating from 140 cases through December 30, the DOH logged 235 fireworks-related injuries (FWRI) as of Thursday across 62 sentinel hospitals, a 127.66% jump expected to reach around 300 with delayed reports up to early January 1, 2026, spokesman Albert Domingo said Friday.

Domingo urged immediate medical attention for injuries to prevent tetanus, with free vaccinations at government hospitals.

In the Cordillera Administrative Region, 11 new cases brought the total to 22 as of 6 a.m. January 1—all male patients. Apayao reported eight, Kalinga seven, Baguio City four, and Abra three; Benguet, Ifugao, and Mountain Province had none due to stricter enforcement. Leading causes: boga and kwitis (four each), dynamite (three), luces, whistle bomb, and five-star (two each), pla-pla (one).
