Deliberate efforts to shut down the Linda Mwananchi movement continue to fail as the group holds political rallies across Kenya. Its leader, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, claims they have faced disruptions, bribe attempts, and blocks on digital initiatives. This occurs amid internal ODM tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Linda Mwananchi movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, persists with its political activities despite alleged deliberate obstacles. During the People's Dialogue Festival at Uhuru Park, Sifuna described challenges faced since launching nationwide rallies, including disruptions and claims of bribe offers up to Sh2 billion.
"We know there is propaganda that we were offered up to Sh2 billion to stop our campaign. But this movement is bigger than any one person; we will not be bought," Sifuna stated.
Siaya Senator James Orengo has warned against suppressing differing views in Kenyan politics. "In a democracy, there must be space for different voices to be heard without threats or restrictions," Orengo said at political gatherings.
Group leaders also claim attempts to pay some members to quit, with propaganda spread that Sifuna sought funds to abandon the campaign. Moreover, their plans to launch a website and donation number have been blocked multiple times.
In response, Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino have opposed the registration of a new party called Linda Mwananchi Party, filing complaints with the Registrar of Political Parties. Political analyst Dr. Isaac Gichuki views this as a strategy to undermine the movement, alongside ODM's decision to remove Sifuna as Secretary General.
This tension unfolds within ODM, where Linda Mwananchi opposes government cooperation, while Linda Ground supports it. Linda Mwananchi rallies have faced security disruptions, unlike those of Linda Ground led by Oburu Odinga. Analysts like Diana Avisa say these tactics are strengthening the youth-backed movement.
"It is clear that at every turn, plots are hatched to kill Linda Mwananchi... A movement started by the people has strength that can overcome alliances of influential politicians," Avisa remarked.
