Bukayo Saka gave England the lead in the 28th minute with a brilliant volley from inside the box, arrowing the ball past Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic. Saka, who had raised concerns after appearing to ask to be substituted, later dismissed any injury fears. "I just wanted to change my boots – that was it," Saka told ITV Football. "It’s a performance we can be proud of. It was a clean strike. I was happy it went in." The Arsenal forward had missed earlier matches this season due to a hamstring injury but showed no signs of discomfort.
The game remained tight until the 90th minute, when Eberechi Eze curled in the second goal after Phil Foden surged clear from the halfway line. Eze had earlier hit the woodwork in the 87th minute. Reflecting on Foden's assist, Eze said: "You know these types of players who are always going to put the ball in the right position for you. I just saw the opportunity and it went in."
