Netflix's Extraction franchise is advancing with principal photography for the third film scheduled to begin in June 2026 in Sydney, Australia. The update comes ahead of a planned spinoff series and another film in the expanding universe. Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Tyler Rake under director Sam Hargrave.
Netflix's Extraction series, which began with the 2020 release of the first film, has established itself as the streaming service's largest action franchise. The initial movie introduced Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a former special forces operative turned mercenary, and featured director Sam Hargrave's innovative one-take action sequences. The 2023 sequel, Extraction 2, expanded on these elements, receiving further acclaim for its enhanced stunts and scale.
Production for Extraction 3 has now been registered, signaling its progression. Principal photography is set to commence in June 2026 and continue through early October, marking a shift to Sydney, Australia, as the filming location. Previous installments were shot in locations including India, Thailand, Prague in the Czech Republic, and Vienna in Austria. Extraction 2 had originally planned for Australia but relocated due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The third film was announced shortly after Extraction 2's success. At Netflix's 2023 TUDUM event, Hemsworth shared: “I want to thank all of you sincerely from the bottom of my heart, the fans and the support, for the first film. We wouldn’t be here without you. So thank you, thank you so much.” He added, “I know we’ve only just released Extraction 2, but is anyone interested in seeing more of Tyler Rake in the future? Well, guess what? Because between us, between us friends, we’re already talking about Extraction 3 thanks to the response.”
Hargrave returns to direct, with Hemsworth starring. The project falls under the AGBO production banner of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who serve as producers alongside Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin. Fraser Taggart, known for Mission: Impossible 7 and 8, joins as director of photography, while Joe Russo writes the script.
Expanding the franchise, a spinoff series titled Mercenary: An Extraction Series began shooting in late 2025. It comprises eight episodes and stars Omar Sy, with co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, Ed Speleers, and Sacha Dhawan. Additionally, a film called TYGO is in development, set in South Korea and focusing on a child soldier who becomes a mercenary. It features Don Lee from Train to Busan, Lee Jin-uk from Squid Game, and Lisa of BLACKPINK, who debuted in acting in The White Lotus Season 3. Lee Sang-yong, director of The Roundup, helms the project from a script by Cha Woo-jin of Holy Night: Demon Hunters.
No release date is confirmed for Extraction 3, though prior films saw a two-year gap from filming to release.
