Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk announced an animated Firefly series at Awesome Con, with the original cast returning, Joss Whedon's blessing, and a script ready under new showrunners.
At Awesome Con in Washington D.C., Nathan Fillion (Captain Mal Reynolds) and Alan Tudyk (Hoban 'Wash' Washburne) revealed during a reunion panel that an animated continuation of Joss Whedon's cult sci-fi western Firefly is in development. The announcement follows Fillion's recent cryptic Instagram videos visiting castmates like Gina Torres (Zoe), Morena Baccarin (Inara), Sean Maher (Simon), Summer Glau (River), and Jewel Staite (Kaylee), which fueled reboot rumors.
Fillion confirmed Joss Whedon's support and greenlight from 20th Century Fox/Disney. Showrunners are Tara Butters and Marc Guggenheim, a married couple who worked on the original series. A script is complete, with animation by ShadowMachine (Oscar- and Emmy-winning studio). The team is now pitching to networks and platforms.
Firefly aired one 14-episode season in 2002-2003 about outlaws led by Mal and Zoe smuggling in an Alliance-controlled universe post-civil war. Canceled after out-of-order airing, it spawned the 2005 film Serenity. This news comes after a stalled Buffy revival at Hulu.
