Fisherman records rare orcas on southern Bahia coast

A group of fishermen from Ilhéus in southern Bahia spotted three orcas surrounding a fishing boat on Wednesday (January 7), in a rare recording shared by fisherman Fernando Filho. The video, posted on his social media, highlights the unusual presence of the animals in the area. Filho said it is the second time he has sighted orcas there, the first about six years ago.

Fisherman Fernando Filho from Ilhéus in southern Bahia captured an impressive video on Wednesday (January 7) showing three orcas swimming around his fishing boat. The recording, shared on his Instagram account (@ff.pesca), highlights a rare sighting on the Bahian coast, drawing attention from locals and nature enthusiasts.

Filho explained that this is the second occurrence he has witnessed in the area. "I saw a group of orcas here in the city and many people doubted it. Today, we saw them again and got an incredible filming. This is the most intelligent animal in the ocean, it never takes bait," the fisherman said.

The first sighting he mentioned happened about six years ago, when people doubted his story. Orcas, known for their intelligence and social behavior, are uncommon in this part of the Brazilian coast, making the video a valuable document for local marine observations. The material was highlighted by the media as a rare testimony of wildlife in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Scientists suggest that orcas hunting common dolphins led to two mass stranding events in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Videos from citizen scientists captured dolphins fleeing into shallow bays, where some became trapped and died. The findings highlight how predator-prey interactions can contribute to these mysterious occurrences.

Researchers have observed killer whales and Pacific white-sided dolphins working together to catch Chinook salmon off northern Vancouver Island. The orcas dive deep with the dolphins to locate the fish, then eat most of it while the dolphins scavenge the remains. This interspecies collaboration highlights the complex social behaviors of marine mammals.

On Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, gray wolves have begun hunting sea otters, a behavior that scientists are racing to understand. Led by University of Rhode Island Ph.D. candidate Patrick Bailey, the research explores how these predators capture marine prey and the broader ecological implications. This shift could link land and ocean food webs in unexpected ways.
