Google advances AI search with new agentic features

Google is expanding its AI-driven search tools with new agent capabilities and a redesigned interface. The changes, unveiled at the company’s I/O 2026 event, aim to make search more conversational and interactive. Executives say the updates reflect a broader shift where AI is central to how users find information.

Search vice president Liz Reid described the direction during the keynote, stating that Google search is now AI search. AI Mode, which was made official last year, has seen usage double every quarter and now reaches more than one billion monthly users. The company is integrating this experience more deeply across its products, including a seamless link between AI Overviews and AI Mode that is available on both mobile and desktop devices.
