HBO reveals The Comeback season 3 details with Andrew Scott

HBO has announced that the third and final season of its revived comedy series The Comeback will premiere in March 2026. Andrew Scott joins the cast as a studio head, with the plot centering on Lisa Kudrow's character starring in an AI-written sitcom. The news came during an HBO Max presentation in London, accompanied by a first-look image.

Announcement and Premiere Details

The third season of The Comeback, co-created by Lisa Kudrow and Michael Patrick King, was revealed on December 3, 2025, at an HBO Max slate presentation in London. HBO chief Casey Bloys, alongside Kudrow and King, confirmed the premiere for March 2026. This marks the final season of the cringe comedy, which originally aired in 2005 for 13 episodes before cancellation and revival in 2014 for eight episodes.

Plot and Casting

The new season follows B-list actress Valerie Cherish (Kudrow) as she stars in the first-ever sitcom written by AI. Co-creator Michael Patrick King explained the concept: “The joke that’s already played out is that AI is bad... So we had to go deeper and figure out what would be the issue if AI was actually learning fast and that people were trying to stay ahead of it.” Bloys noted the timely nature, encouraging a quick production to stay ahead of the curve.

Andrew Scott, known for roles in Fleabag and Ripley, joins as the studio head Valerie clashes with. King described him as “a very important character, and we got a very important actor to play him.” Kudrow reacted emotionally to the casting, saying, “I know, I almost cried!”

Returning cast includes Dan Bucatinsky as Valerie's publicist, Laura Silverman as reality show producer Jane, and Damian Young as her husband Mark. Other regulars are Tim Bagley, Matt Cook, Jack O'Brien, and Ella Stiller, with Kudrow's son Julian Stern making his TV debut. Recurring roles feature Abbi Jacobson, John Early, Barry Shabaka Henley, Tony Macht, Brittany O'Grady, and Zane Phillips.

Production Insights

Filming took place on the Friends soundstage, which Kudrow said was emotional: “I had to guard myself every day that we were on that stage, otherwise I would cry... this trilogy, this character and this show means so much to me, and then Friends obviously meant a lot to me too.” The series is executive produced by Kudrow, King, Bucatinsky, and John Melfi.
