Holly Marie Combs deems Shannen Doherty's Charmed firing sick and twisted

Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty's co-star on Charmed, has described the actress's 2001 firing from the show as deeply mishandled and insulting. In a recent podcast episode, Combs expressed frustration over the unresolved drama that lingers decades later. The comments highlight ongoing tensions among the cast, even after Doherty's death in 2024.

Shannen Doherty portrayed Prue Halliwell, the eldest sister, in the first three seasons of the WB's Charmed, a hit series about witch sisters. Her departure came abruptly after the season 3 finale in 2001, when she was fired and her character killed off. The decision stemmed from reported conflicts, particularly with co-star Alyssa Milano, who played the youngest sister Phoebe.

Milano has denied demanding Doherty's removal, stating such choices were beyond her influence. However, Holly Marie Combs, who played middle sister Piper, stands firmly by Doherty. On the House of Halliwell podcast, co-hosted with Brian Krause and Drew Fuller, Combs criticized the handling of the situation. "There was just so many different ways it could have been handled," she said. "And the fact of the matter is it was handled so s****ily. It was such a massive insult to injury to let her direct [the season 3 finale] and go out on this high note. Like, it's just so sick and twisted."

Combs has previously supported Doherty's account, recounting that a producer claimed Milano forced the network to choose between them and threatened legal action. Milano regrets the lasting impact on the fandom. At MegaCon in 2024, she shared, "I'm the most sad for the fans... I'm the most sad that a show that has meant so much to so many people has been tarnished by a toxicity that is still to this day, almost a quarter of a century later, still happening. And I'm sad that people can't move past it. And I'm sad that we all can't just celebrate the success of a show that meant so much to all of us."

Doherty responded to Milano's remarks, noting she endured trauma from the experience and spoke out years later for healing. Rose McGowan, who replaced Doherty as Paige Halliwell, accused Milano of being shielded by silence from others. Doherty passed away in 2024 at age 53, prompting tributes from Milano and fellow cast members from Charmed and 90210. The feud's echoes persist, underscoring the challenges of reconciling past professional rifts.
