Hong Kong rescuers are searching for an 81-year-old man surnamed He missing since a hike in Tuen Mun on Saturday. The man split from his wife after feeling tired, and one of his shoes was found nearly 20 hours into the operation. A team from police, firefighters and other agencies is involved.

Police said the man surnamed He was hiking with his wife along Section 10 of the MacLehose Trail around 10am on Saturday, heading in the direction of the Tai Lam Chung Reservoir in Tuen Mun.

According to a social media post from the man’s adult child, he split off from his wife at the entrance of Tai Lam Country Park after feeling tired. His wife later realised he was missing, and the family filed a police report at 6.54pm.

Authorities assembled a rescue team comprising police officers, firefighters and members of the Government Flying Service and the Civil Aid Service. At 1.32pm on Sunday, rescuers discovered one of the man’s slip-on trainers.

The search continues amid an amber rainstorm warning signal and thunderstorm warning.
