ICETEX opens 100% scholarships in seismology and geology

ICETEX has opened calls until April 8, 2026, for two full international scholarships in virtual seismology and applied geology programs, in partnership with the University of Chile and AGCID. The opportunities target Colombian professionals in engineering and related fields.

The Colombian Institute of Educational Credit and Technical Studies Abroad (ICETEX) announced two 100% scholarships for virtual programs offered by the University of Chile, in collaboration with the Chilean Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AGCID).

The International Diploma in Seismology: Use of Seismic Data will run for 19 weeks from July 6 to November 13, 2026, focusing on the analysis and interpretation of seismic data and seismic hazard assessment. The International Course in Soil Geology for Non-Specialist Engineers will last 30 academic hours from June 1 to 12, 2026, aimed at identifying geological conditions for infrastructure projects and territorial planning.

The scholarships cover full tuition and provide certification from the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile. They target professionals in engineering, geophysics, environmental sciences, and related fields, especially those involved in geological risk assessment, scientific research, or disaster risk management policies.

"These calls strengthen access for Colombian professionals to specialized technical training in key areas for risk management and sustainable development. From ICETEX, we continue promoting international opportunities that contribute to strengthening the country's talent," said Vanessa Caicedo, head of ICETEX's International Relations Office.

The application process is free, conducted directly through the ICETEX platform without intermediaries, with preselection by the National Scholarships Commission and final decisions by AGCID and the University of Chile.

Colfuturo announced that its Programa Crédito Beca will enter a new phase without financial support from the National Government starting in 2026. President Gustavo Petro backed the decision, arguing that the entity is private and has mainly benefited high socioeconomic strata in major cities. The program has enabled nearly 25,000 Colombians to pursue master's and doctoral degrees at top universities worldwide.

Colfuturo has opened its annual Programa Crédito Beca call for 2026, the first without government support, providing up to US$50,000 to Colombian professionals for master's or doctoral studies at top global universities. The initiative aims to build high-level human talent and encourage experts' return to Colombia through extra incentives.

The Colombian government has withdrawn state funding from Colfuturo's Crédito Beca program, which supported postgraduate studies abroad for over 20 years, to redirect resources toward a new doctoral scholarship model targeting vulnerable populations. Science Minister Yesenia Olaya defended the move, stating that Colfuturo failed to meet democratization criteria for educational access. The decision has drawn criticism for restricting opportunities amid global technological shifts.

At the Talent, Education, and Productivity Forum, Colombian experts discussed aligning higher education with labor market demands through dual models. Higher Education Vice Minister Ricardo Moreno stressed free access as a right in vulnerable areas, while Ascun and Sena leaders highlighted skills gaps in technical fields and technology's role.

A government expert panel has recommended the Institute of Science Tokyo as a candidate for designation as a University for International Research Excellence in a report released on Friday. This status would make it eligible for aid from a ¥10 trillion Japanese government fund supporting universities. Currently, Tohoku University is the only institution with this recognition.

The recent allocation of funds by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) excluded key centers like the Center for Climate Science and Resilience (CR2), reigniting debates on Chile's scientific policy. This shift eliminates previous priority areas, such as climate change, amid wildfire alerts. Experts warn that the country is losing strategic research capabilities.

The National Board of Aid and Scholarships (Junaeb) has launched the “Hazla corta, tómate la foto hoy” campaign so that over 200,000 new higher education students can take their photo for the National Student Card (TNE). This process can be done digitally via an app, avoiding last-minute rushes. Junaeb's national director, Camila Rubio, stressed the need to complete it in advance.
