More than 58,000 drivers in Limpopo have not renewed their expired licenses, according to the provincial transport department. Spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene is calling on them to do so by the end of November. Motorists are also advised to check vehicle roadworthiness ahead of the festive season.
The Limpopo Department of Transport has highlighted a significant backlog in driver's license renewals, with over 58,000 drivers yet to update their expired documents. Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene emphasized the urgency of this action, urging affected individuals to renew by November's end to comply with regulations.
Chuene also stressed the importance of vehicle maintenance as the festive season approaches, a period known for increased road travel in South Africa. "As we approach the festive season it is very important for vehicle owners to make sure their tyres are replaced if worn, their cracked windscreens are fixed, and their brakes, lights and wipers are in good working order and that your license is valid," Chuene stated. He further advised, "Help us make this festive safer on our roads by making responsible choices, keep alcohol far away from the driver seat."
This initiative aims to enhance road safety during the holidays, when traffic volumes typically rise. The department's call aligns with broader efforts to reduce accidents through proactive measures. No specific reasons for the renewal delays were detailed in the announcement, but the focus remains on ensuring all vehicles and drivers meet safety standards.
