The core 'Balrog' box includes playable characters Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, each with their own player board, skill tree, and legendary items. Players select a 'Journey' that determines objectives and a path across a 5×5 grid, where face-down tiles reveal random events. Enemy spawns and dice-driven battles occur via random card draws, while a Barad-dûr tracker progressively increases difficulty as Sauron closes in.
The adventure culminates in puzzle-like "Mini Boss" battles, followed by a three-stage boss fight against the Balrog of Moria. Expansions include the Cinematic Journey add-on, which adapts exploration to specific Lord of the Rings storylines but still leads to Moria. The Saruman expansion adds Two Towers content, such as minis for the wizard, Orthanc tower, Merry, and Pippin, plus a Helm's Deep mini-boss option.
Additional paid add-ons feature Gandalf the Grey, Boromir as playable characters, Treebeard, the Watcher in the Water, and Moria's Cave Troll.
