Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has pledged to honour civilians and military personnel who died during the rescue of abducted Oriire school pupils and teachers. The victims, rescued after 56 days, are undergoing medical observation.
Governor Seyi Makinde visited the rescued victims at the 2nd Division Nigerian Army Medical Services in Ibadan on Saturday. He said 39 pupils and five teachers had been freed and would remain under observation for 48 hours before handover to the state government.
Makinde promised support for the victims’ recovery and reunion with families. He also vowed that civilians and security personnel who lost their lives would not have died in vain.
President Bola Tinubu praised the security forces for the operation that arrested eight abductors and neutralised others without collateral damage. The African Democratic Congress called on the federal government to focus on preventing kidnappings rather than measuring success by rescues.
