Canadian prospect Gavin McKenna says he turned doubts about his game into motivation during his first college season. The 18-year-old forward spoke to Sportsnet while attending the NHL scouting combine in Buffalo.
McKenna recorded 51 points in 35 games for Penn State but the team missed the Frozen Four playoffs. He described the move from junior hockey in the WHL to NCAA competition as tougher than expected. The forward told Sportsnet that seeing the growing questions about his status pushed him to train harder on and off the ice. He added that criticism will likely continue throughout his career but the experience taught him the value of hard work. Toronto Maple Leafs hold the top pick in the June draft after winning the lottery. General manager John Chayka has already visited McKenna and his family in Whitehorse. McKenna said landing with the Leafs would feel special for a Canadian player.
