Missouri man sentenced to 20 years for father's murder

A 20-year-old Missouri man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of his father.

Carter Joshua Curtis entered the plea late last week in the death of 41-year-old John McMurphy. Bates County Circuit Court Judge M. Brandon Baker handed down the sentence immediately afterward and gave Curtis credit for 613 days already served in detention. The shooting took place on Sept. 28, 2024, at a home on 8th Street in Adrian. Curtis called 911 at 11:23 p.m. to report the incident.
