New docuseries highlights Donkey Sanctuary's role in donkey care

A new ABC docuseries, Donkey King, is drawing attention to The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, by showcasing its influence on a California-based animal rescue. The series follows Ron King and his team at Oscar’s Place as they learn from the UK sanctuary's experts. Premiering on January 3, the 17-part show has quickly gained popularity among viewers.

The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth has long been recognized as a leader in donkey welfare, and its expertise is now reaching a wider audience through ABC's Donkey King. This docuseries centers on Oscar’s Place Adoption Centre and Sanctuary in Northern California, where co-founder Ron King and his team work to rescue and rehabilitate donkeys for better lives.

Ron King, a former media executive, emphasized the sanctuary's importance during a visit. "Our desire is to be the best we can be for the donkeys in our care, and the place to find donkey experts is at The Donkey Sanctuary," he said. "So we are here to learn from the gold standard in donkey care, (and) how we can be better at what we do."

In 2023, King and his team spent three days at the Devon facility, engaging with donkey behaviourists, welfare specialists, and the veterinary team. Their itinerary featured hands-on sessions at the donkey hospital near Honiton and detailed training with animal care staff. King returned later that year with his veterinarians to build on this knowledge.

Donkey King, which premiered on January 3, explores the daily efforts at Oscar’s Place. King expressed enthusiasm about the series: "I can’t wait to introduce viewers to their new favourite animal. Donkeys are emotional, intelligent, curious, and hilarious. Donkey King is sure to bring joy into people’s hearts and homes."

The 17-episode production has already resonated with audiences, highlighting the emotional and practical aspects of donkey care while crediting The Donkey Sanctuary's foundational role.
