Nuclear Throne launches massive tenth anniversary update

Nuclear Throne, the top-down roguelike FPS, has received its biggest update yet to mark a decade since its debut. Update 100 introduces a new character, custom modes, and enhanced co-op features, boosting player counts significantly on Steam. The update is live on PC, with console versions expected soon.

The developers behind Nuclear Throne have reunited to celebrate the game's tenth anniversary with Update 100, hailed as the 'biggest and baddest update in Nuclear Throne History.' Originally released on PC around 2015, the title expanded to PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, earning an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam for its chaotic, mutant-filled post-apocalyptic world.

Update Highlights

This patch adds substantial content and quality-of-life improvements. Players can now unlock a thirteenth character named Cuz, who wields a Cry ability to shred enemies and projectiles while carrying up to three weapons. A new Custom mode lets users tweak gameplay for unique challenges, and every character gains unlockable C-skins along with related achievements.

Co-op receives major upgrades, supporting up to four players locally, with reworked reviving mechanics that integrate Revive Chests and adjusted Ultra Mutations for multiplayer balance. The update also brings localization to 15 languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese, broadening its global appeal.

Technical enhancements include 60+ fps support (with 30 fps option retained), widescreen compatibility, a revamped settings menu, and HUD tooltips for mutations and weapons. Additional changes encompass Steam Deck verification, an updated Mac build for 64-bit and Apple Silicon devices, improved gamepad handling, new side art, a custom cursor, and a minor buff to the Open Mind mutation. The community leaderboards on Thronebutt have been overhauled, and numerous fixes round out the package.

Post-update, Steam concurrent players surged from about 100 to over 1,000, signaling renewed interest. The game is currently discounted 50% on Steam to £4.99, making it an accessible entry point for newcomers.
