Minister Kassio Nunes Marques was elected president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) on Tuesday, April 14, in a symbolic vote. André Mendonça will serve as vice-president, with inauguration set for late May and a two-year term.
The TSE elected Minister Kassio Nunes Marques, 53, from Teresina, as president of the electoral court during a session in Brasília on Tuesday, April 14. The vote was symbolic, based on seniority among Supreme Federal Court (STF) ministers. André Mendonça, also 53, was selected as vice-president.
In a brief speech, Nunes Marques thanked colleagues and said presiding over the TSE "is one of the greatest honors" of his life. Mendonça pledged support: "I, as vice-president, while here, rest assured I will assist you with all my strength so that Your Excellency has a successful administration and the TSE and Brazilian democracy have a beautiful election festival this year".
Nunes Marques succeeds Cármen Lúcia, whose term ends before June 3; she stepped down early to allow more preparation time for the October elections. The minister stated the move aims to "ensure balance and tranquility in the transition of duties", without haste.
Appointed to the STF by Jair Bolsonaro in 2020, Nunes Marques is the first from the ex-president's administration to lead the TSE. He plans a presidency with minimal judicial intervention in political disputes, vigilance on campaign excesses, plus approved rules against AI content and crime-linked candidacies.
