The Students' Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, has started a 72-hour lecture boycott due to transportation issues as buses and tricycles donated by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu began operations. The boycott instructs students to shun academic activities from Monday to Thursday, April 16, 2026.
The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, with President Adelani David and Secretary Habeeb Oke, issued a statement on April 13, 2026, directing the boycott. The decision followed a one-week observation period and a joint meeting of the Central Executive Council (CEC), Hall Executive Council (HEC), and Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
The union stated that the new university transport system exposes students to harsh conditions, including poor campus coverage, shortages of buses and tricycles, overcrowding, discomfort, and insufficient drivers.
It demands more vehicles for the over 35,000-strong university community, immediate reintroduction of the previous system until additional buses arrive, proper implementation for reliable mobility, and consultation with union leaders before changes.
University spokesperson Abiodun Olarewaju had last week appealed for patience to resolve issues with the 50 buses and 30 tricycles donated by Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The union will review the situation after 72 hours, considering mass protests if demands are unmet.
