Rodrigo Carreño Rodríguez, a subprefect of the Chilean Investigative Police (PDI), died in a traffic accident on Saturday along Route F-560 in Villa Alemana. The crash involved a truck colliding with three smaller vehicles, with his four-year-old son escaping unharmed. Carreño served as head of the National Congress Brigade.

The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon at kilometer 1.800 of Route F-560 in Villa Alemana commune. A truck collided with three smaller vehicles, killing Rodrigo Carreño Rodríguez, a PDI subprefect, who was traveling with his four-year-old son. The child is out of life-threatening danger, according to initial reports.

Carreño began his police career in 2001 in Valparaíso, joining the Homicide Brigade. In 2007, he moved to Arica, participating in the Criminal Investigation Brigade, the Homicide Brigade, and the Provincial Prefecture Assistantship. He returned to Valparaíso in 2011 to join the Port Crimes Investigation Brigade, then the Viña del Mar Prefecture, and again the Valparaíso Homicide Brigade. His professionalism led to his role as controller in the Regional Inspectorate.

In 2019, he relocated to Santiago and graduated as an officer from the Higher Police Studies Academy. He then became head of the Anti-Narcotics and Against Organized Crime Brigade (Brianco) in Talca. In 2020, he served as controller in the Subdirectorate of Intelligence on Organized Crime and Migration Security. From 2021, he led the National Congress Brigade, a position for which he was recognized by the Senate in June of the previous year during the PDI's 91st anniversary.

The news prompted condolences from parliamentarians. José Miguel Castro from the Chamber of Deputies stated: “We express our deep sorrow at the passing of an official who for years performed with professionalism, commitment, and a high sense of duty a job of enormous responsibility within the National Congress, contributing decisively to the security of this institution and those who work in it.” Senator Manuel José Ossandón added: “His departure mourns our institution and all those who value his professionalism, dedication, and service to the country and especially to the National Congress where he worked.”
