Phil Dunster joins live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' cast

Phil Dunster, star of 'Ted Lasso,' has been cast as Eret in Universal Pictures' live-action adaptation of 'How to Train Your Dragon 2.' The sequel, directed by Dean DeBlois, reunites several actors from the original animated film and is scheduled for release on June 11, 2027.

Phil Dunster, best known for portraying Jamie Tartt in Apple TV+'s 'Ted Lasso,' has joined the ensemble cast of Universal's live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' in the role of Eret, son of Eret. In the animated films, Eret serves as a bit of an antagonist, though the primary villain, Drago, will be played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, known from 'Severance.' Dunster's casting adds to a growing lineup that includes Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler as Stoick, Cate Blanchett reprising her role as Valka, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. Dean DeBlois returns to write, direct, and executive produce the film, which follows the story from the second animated entry where Hiccup discovers a secret dragon fortress and learns his mother is alive. The production is overseen by Marc Platt Productions, with Marc Platt and Adam Siegel producing, and studio SVP Lexi Barta supervising for Universal. The 'How to Train Your Dragon' franchise, based on Cressida Cowell's bestselling book series, has grossed over $2.2 billion across its four animated films. The first live-action adaptation, released last summer, achieved a global box office of $636.4 million, marking the series' strongest performance to date. Dunster, represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, CAA, United Agents, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman, recently appeared as Quinn in Apple TV+'s 'Surface' and will next star in the upcoming series 'Rooster' alongside Steve Carell.
