Pia Cayetano elected as Senate blue ribbon chair

Senator Pia Cayetano was elected chairperson of the Senate blue ribbon committee on May 20, replacing Senator Panfilo Lacson who led the investigation into a multibillion-peso flood control scam.

The election follows a Senate leadership change that installed her brother Alan Peter Cayetano as Senate president. Cayetano previously chaired the panel during the 19th Congress and is the first woman to hold the position.

Lacson stepped down without concluding the flood control probe, which has implicated some senators and allies. The panel is tasked with examining corruption in public works projects.

Cayetano has not yet issued a statement on her new role. Other Senate committee assignments also shifted, including changes in foreign relations and constitutional amendments panels.
