A pig's head along with an antisemitic poster was left at the home of Nice's mayor, Christian Estrosi. A judicial investigation has been opened for threats and incitement to hatred. The incident occurs as Estrosi runs for municipal re-election.
On February 28, a pig's head was found attached to the gate of Christian Estrosi's home, the mayor of Nice and a member of Horizons, ahead of the municipal elections on March 15 and 22. An insulting poster titled 'Connard!' depicted the official's face with a Star of David on his forehead, a symbol of Judaism.
The Nice prosecutor's office, through Damien Martinelli, announced an investigation for 'threats and outrage against a public authority figure' and 'incitement to hatred and violence on grounds of religion'.
Estrosi shared a photo of the discovery on the social network X, stating: 'All that I have always fought against in my city strikes at my door today. Abject'. This act comes amid heightened tensions: following the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7, 2023, the mayor had displayed Israeli flags on the town hall, which were removed last June by order of the administrative court. He has since repeatedly defended the Israeli government.
His main rival, Deputy Éric Ciotti, president of the UDR allied with the RN, expressed solidarity in a statement, offering his 'full and complete support' to Estrosi and his family, and condemning 'a serious attack on human dignity and a direct assault on the fundamental values of the Republic'.
This incident highlights local tensions surrounding religion and international politics, with no perpetrators identified yet.
