Pave Leo XIV. har kritiseret den formaliserede velsignelse af par af samme køn i den katolske kirke i Tyskland. Han fremsatte bemærkningerne under sin flyvetur tilbage til Rom fra sin rejse til Afrika og udtalte, at Den Hellige Stol er uenig. Pave Leo XIV. udtrykte kritik af velsignelser af par af samme køn på sin hjemrejse fra Ækvatorialguinea til Rom. "Den Hellige Stol har allerede talt med de tyske biskopper," sagde han til journalister. "Den Hellige Stol har gjort det klart, at vi ikke er enige i den formaliserede velsignelse af par – i dette tilfælde par af samme køn eller par i uregelmæssige situationer."

Udtalelsen er et svar til kardinal Reinhard Marx, tidligere formand for Den Tyske Bispekonference. Han tillod for nylig velsignelser af par af samme køn i sit ærkebispedømme München og Freising. Dette er baseret på en anbefaling fra Den Tyske Bispekonference og Centralkomitéen for Tyske Katolikker fra sidste år. Sådanne velsignelser er allerede almindelig praksis i mange tyske bispedømmer.

I slutningen af 2023 tillod den afdøde pave Frans sådanne velsignelser med restriktioner: De må ikke forveksles med ægteskab, må ikke indeholde bryllupslignende elementer og må ikke finde sted under liturgi.

Pave Leo XIV. fremhævede større emner: "Det er meget vigtigt at forstå, at kirkens enhed eller splittelse ikke bør dreje sig om spørgsmål vedrørende seksualitet. [...] I virkeligheden mener jeg, at der er langt større og vigtigere emner såsom retfærdighed, ligestilling, mandens og kvindens frihed, samt religionsfrihed." Han advarede om, at det at gå ud over pave Frans' "tutti, tutti, tutti"-formulering kunne forårsage splittelse. Den katolske kirke i Afrika afviser sådanne velsignelser.
