Producer of Vijay's Theri postpones re-release to support new films

The producer of Tamil superstar Vijay's blockbuster Theri has deferred its planned re-release to make way for upcoming movies, earning praise from the industry. Kalaipuli S Thanu's decision follows appeals from directors of new films set for January 23. This gesture highlights solidarity in Tamil cinema.

Vijay’s 2016 action thriller Theri, produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu under V Creations, was originally scheduled for a re-release on January 23, 2026. However, with multiple new films lined up for the same date, directors appealed to Thanu to reconsider.

Director Mohan G Kshatriyan, whose film Draupathi 2 is set for release on January 23, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, requesting the postponement. In his appeal, he wrote: “Requesting @theVcreations kalaipuli s Thanu sir to support upcoming team like us and postpone Thalapathy's #Theri movie releasing this 23rd January.. Sir u did a lot of welfare for new Producers and upcoming directors.. So kindly support our #Draupathi2 movie to release in main…” The team behind Hotspot 2 Much, another film releasing that day, made a similar request.

Thanu responded positively, announcing the deferral and stating that a new date would be revealed on Monday. “The prime responsibility of V Creations is to encourage and motivate new directors, good films, and upcoming producers. Keeping this in mind, the release date of Theri will be announced tomorrow,” he said.

Mohan G Kshatriyan expressed gratitude, noting that his team would meet Thanu in person and thanking Vijay’s fans for their understanding. The move drew widespread appreciation, with producer Suresh Kamatchi calling it “a good heart” and wishing Thanu continued success. Industry observers have hailed the decision as an example of support for emerging voices in Tamil cinema.

Theri follows a former cop who, after a tragic attack on his family, adopts a new identity to raise his daughter. When gangsters threaten her, he confronts his past to protect her and seek justice.
