President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged stronger enforcement against illegal migration as anti-foreigner protests spread across South Africa.
On 2 June, Ramaphosa spoke during the Presidency Budget Vote in Parliament. He said the government would increase workplace inspections, prosecute employers who break labour laws, and strengthen border security. Ramaphosa also warned against violence and xenophobia.
Protests have taken place in several provinces. In Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, demonstrators targeted homes of foreigners on 2 June. Hundreds marched in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, the same day. Earlier incidents included looting in Mangaung on 26 May and in Estcourt on 29 May.
Public surveys show rising hostility toward immigrants. The Human Sciences Research Council reported that 42 percent of respondents would not welcome any immigrants. Ramaphosa stressed that all people in South Africa must respect the law and that rights must be upheld.
