Rory McIlroy described how he relies on TrackMan launch monitor data to refine his swing feel ahead of The Open Championship. He addressed concerns that heavy dependence on such technology could hinder performance in variable conditions.
McIlroy spoke during Tuesday’s press conference. He said the numbers serve as reference points that help connect data to physical sensations in his swing.
“If you see a certain number on TrackMan, it gives you a feeling of what you need to do,” McIlroy said. He added that the device helps identify small swing changes early.
“To me, I actually feel like it’s a great tool to use when your swing gets off a bit and you can sort of train your feels back into where they need to be,” he said. McIlroy uses the monitor during tournament weeks only for minor adjustments rather than major swing rebuilds.
